The game was originally built by just three people at Imangi Studios, and it has been a very successful game for the company, although they haven't turned into a massive company with a lot of employees, they have a team of just 11 who continue to develop the game and other games. Temple Run was the company's 10th game that they launched, and the three developers created the original game in an apartment over a space of five months.
According to the announcement, the milestone '1 billionth download' of the Temple Run franchise came sometime between the 2011-launched original Temple Run and the last-year launched Temple Run 2. Pointing out that the Temple Run players have now run a total of 50 trillion meters, with more than 32 billion games having been played thus far, Shepherd said that the success of the Temple Run franchise has "just been amazing;" and added, referring to the game's play pattern: "If you can bring something novel and new to the table, it adds that extra excitement level and that extra component to the virality of it."

On Wednesday, Imangi Studios revealed that its Temple Run franchise managed to cross the billion download threshold sometime between the release of Temple Run and its sequel, Temple Run 2. The first game in the franchise, created by Keith Shepherd and Natalia Luckyanova, debuted in 2011. Shepherd said the studio may work on Temple Run 3 at some point but they have some other games in the works in the meantime.

Imangi Studios has had a rare hit in Temple Run, whose various versions have now reached more than a billion downloads on mobile devices. We're in the fortunate position of having such a huge success in Temple Run and the stability that brings to our company, but at the same time, we're still grounded in the experience of wanting to be really creative and innovative and prototyping and messing around with what will ultimately become our next great product as well.
